A Lip Care Routine for Soft, Supple Lips

Lips make up for one of the most noticeable features on the face. They are a mirror of your overall health and your lifestyle. Dry lips are one of the most common problems people face. You must have used a chapstick before to get better lips. But this isn't gonna cut it. You need to follow a thorough and regular lip care routine to maintain your lips, keeping them nourished, keeping them soft and healthy.

Let's first list a few reasons as to why lips get dry

Dehydration and Nutrient Deficiency: If you don't keep yourself hydrated, your lips tend to show signs of chapping. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking more water and eat more water-rich fruits as they provide the necessary nutrients and also the required water content to keep you hydrated. Harsh Sunlight: There may be occurrences where you go out in the hot summer where the sun is scorching hot and bright. It causes damage to your lips as the topmost layer of lips is very delicate. Make sure to cover yourself with a cloth or a facemask when you go out. Licking your Lips: Many don't realise this but licking your lips causes more harm than help. Every time you lick your lips, you're introducing saliva to your skin. There are chemicals in your saliva that help break down food for digestion. Unfortunately, they'll also break down the skin around your lips.

Here are some tips

Exfoliate your lips: Use a lip balm every night before you hit the bed. When you wake up in the morning, make sure to rub/ wipe off the excess dead/dry skin on your lips. You can also use a Sugar Scrub (a mixture of sugar, almond oil and honey). Apply a small amount o the sugar scrub to your lips. Using a clean finger, gently massage your top and bottom lips. When you're finished, rinse off any excess or lick it away. Do this once or twice a week. Stay Hydrated at all times: Being hydrated is one of the most critical aspects of primary healthcare, whether it comes to your lips or your skin. Being hydrated not only keeps you fresh but also helps in bowel movement. Use a Lip Balm: Apply a lip balm at least twice a day to moisturise and protect your lips. It can be used before putting on makeup and before going to bed. Of course, there's no reason not to use it throughout the day as well. Using Vitamin E and Aloe Vera: Vitamin E capsules can be cut open and directly applied on the lips. It tends to increase the generation of new skin cells. Aloe Vera, on the other hand, is a home remedy for moisturising your lips as they have healing and soothing properties, giving the lips the perfect glow. Using Citrus: Using a few drops of lemon juice, you can make your lips appear brighter and slough off dead skin. Just rub the lemon juice on to your skin. Make sure your lips aren't cracked or super dry before you use this remedy, as it may sting and make things worse. Limit the amount of toxins: Pollutants and chemicals cause premature ageing of the skin. This tends to make the skin look dark or wrinkled. Habits like smoking can aggravate this effect and give your lips a faded appearance. Avoiding cigarettes and second-hand smoke can improve the way your lips look. Wearing a scarf to cover lips may also protect them from overexposure.
